Remember Books? TES - 24th March 2006

I just wanted to post a link to an article written by a former college lecturer of mine by the name of Lawrence Alster. It rings true with what I remember of him, the article being written three and a half years ago, my time with him being around 1999-2001. It's a strong case for focusing on literacy in general rather than 'media literacy' in particular.

Remember books?

His article is revealing in documenting how young people are thinking more in images and instantly expressable forms perhaps not appropriate to understanding forms of literary communication. It echoes, a little, my belief that the textual communication found on the internet has more in common with speech than writing, even though the form of that communication is 'written' text. In this sense, media literacy doesn't replace older, more impenetrable forms of literary communication, rather provides an alternative to spoken forms.
